Welcome to the Hip Hop Network Database Project
Hi and welcome to the Hiphop Network Database Project. This project evolved out of something I needed to build in order to keep track of collaboration networks among rappers/hip hop artists. Eventually, it merged into a database, so I designed some of the layout and put it online for the internet to help me out. If you'd like to contact the creator of this site, shoot me an email using the Contact link above at the top.
My data comes primarily from three sources:
- Amazon.com provides a really good API for scraping data about albums, tracks, and track listings. Sometimes their track listings are incomplete and I have to find another source to get good collaboration data. Also, to help me fund the site, I use their ad plaform, so click some links :)
- The original hip-hop lyrics archive (ohhla) is the ultimate hip-hop lyrics archive. Many of their lyrics files have collaboration data that may not necessarily be in the data provided by amazon.
- Reginald Smith, who published a paper on this exact topic back in 2006 and inspired me to do this research to help others interested in either hip-hop or social networks or both.
